Cape Town Archbishop, Thabo Makgoba, visited Pretoria Mediclinic Heart Hospital late on Tuesday to pray a sombre prayer with Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, and other close family members as well.
" May we be filled with gratitude for all the good that he has done for us and our nation, and may we continue to honour his legacy through our lives. Grant Madiba eternal healing and relief from pain and suffering," the prayer read, referring to Mandela by his clan name.
" Grant him a quiet night and a peaceful, perfect end."
Nelson Mandela, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, was admitted on June 8 with a recurrent lung infection. His family and the world have watched helplessly and in fear as the 94-year-old lay in hospital in critical condition with his life seemingly slipping away.
A growing feeling of resignation about Mandela's condition that is increasingly voiced by South Africans, to whom he remains a moral giant, seemed to be echoed by the Archbishop's prayer.
According to South African government, Mandela is no longer able to breathe unassisted.
After several meetings with the family over the past two days, Xhosa Leaders are understood to have been told to 'prepare for the worst' as the former President remains in hospital on life support.
What a great man.
