How a Four-day Old Baby Was Rescued From Pit Toilet in Ibadan

A four-day old baby was, by a stroke of fate, prevented from dying on Saturday, 13th July, after being thrown into a sewage pit at the Salvation Primary School, Kube, Atenda area behind New Castle Hotel, Ibadan.

Report says that the persistent cry of the baby girl, whose mother is not yet identified, attracted a passer-by who called the attention of Alhaja Sariyu Olaniyan, one of the community leaders who in turn called on the Chairman, Landlord Association of Kube, Atenda, Chief Odeyale.

According to Chief Odeyale, a young boy who went to defecate and heard the baby’s cries from the toilet reported to Alhaja Sariyu Olaniyan shortly after their landlord association meeting of Saturday at about 9 am.
“It was God that helped because the girl was still crying when she was brought out of the pit with the assistance of the youths in the area. We had to break the soak-away before we were able to bring her up”. We later took her to University College Hospital (UCH) emergency unit; it was there they referred us to the child Care Unit at Otunba Tunase. We spent more than an hour there. But we thank God that the baby is still much alive”.

“The baby has since been in the custody of the Child Care Unit of Juvenile/ Correctional Institution, Poly- Eleyele road in Ibadan for proper care.

Alhaja Sariyu Olaniyan who believed the baby’s mother, whose identity is not yet known, to be a teenage mother advised parents to be watchful and monitor their daughters whenever they conceived.

The case has been reported to the Yemetu Police Station.
