Multiple Bomb Blasts Hit Kano, at Least 29 Feared Dead, Scores Injured

Multiple bomb blasts reportedly occurred Monday night at a mostly Christian neighbourhood in the Sabon Gari area in Kano.

The blasts were said to have targetted Enugu Street in Sabon Gari, a street filled with outdoor bars and eateries where most of the non-indigenes reside. Resident Kola Oyebanji said he believed “beer parlours” were the target. “My house is not far from there, all my windows are shattered.”

The first bomb went off at about 9.12 p.m Monday night around Ibo/Enugu Road near the biggest Tennis playing ground Forest villa and the International Hotel in Sabongari.

Reports also reveal that armed militants shot at and killed several people at the bar as they scampered for safety, thereby increasing the death toll

Almost simultaneously, on New Road, opposite the Emir Ado Bayero Square, a second bomb also exploded. It happened about 9.15 p.m. A resident of the area confirmed the blast on New Road was not far from St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, a situation that made many believe that the church might have been the target.

A third one went off at about 9.30pm.

Residents described at least four blasts. “There is confusion all over the place. There were four huge explosions, so huge that they shook the whole area. Everywhere is enveloped in smoke and dust,” said Chinyere Madu, a fruit vendor.

Sabon Gari’s Security forces immediately condoned off both sites, which prevented people from moving closer to the places hit by the explosions.

Residents claimed that no fewer than twenty nine people were feared dead and scores injured.
